Juggling lines in hockey is common. It takes a lot of effort to find the right combination of players who mesh together and can be productive. Famous threesomes are often given a name, and sometimes that name has something to do with the players’ names themselves. But what do you think the odds are that of having all three players with the same first name? Not great, but believable. What about all three having the same name and the same birthday? Well it’s true. “Les Trois Denis” were all born on Feb. 4, 1961.

The history of the NHL can be divided into four unique eras, each spanning roughly 25 years. The second era, and most historic of those past, is the Original Six era, where six oldest existing teams battled each other year after year for the Stanley Cup. Toronto, Montreal, NY Rangers, Boston, Chicago an Detroit formed intense rivalries amongst each other and carried the NHL through a golden age of competition unlike any other in sports; one defined by heroes, dynasties and defining the game.

The other Hull you might not know

Everybody knows about “The Golden Jet” Bobby Hull, the all-star left winger of the Chicago Blackhawks and later Winnipeg Jets of the WHA. Everybody knows his son, “The Golden Brett”, who amazingly managed to surpass the legend of his father with Calgary and St. Louis, among others. But there’s another, less-talked about Hull. He’s Bobby’s younger brother, Brett’s uncle, “The Silver Jet”, Dennis Hull, and while his list of accomplishments doesn’t match that of his family, he still made a tremendous impact in the NHL.

In today’s NHL, it’s pretty hard to be surprised by young talent. With years of advance scouting and televised junior games, it’s not common that a young player slips under the radar. By the time the NHL Entry Draft comes around every year, all of the best young skaters are pretty well-known. Every now and then, however, a player falls through the cracks. Calgary’s Rene Bourque is one of those players. The 28-year-old Albertan broke into the NHL in 2005 and nobody knew how or why.

Blackhawks franchise built for the present

The Chicago Blackhawks are tearing up the NHL. They’ve improved statistically in each of the last four seasons, and 2009-10 looks to be no exception. At 16-5-2, they have 34 points, and are on pace for 121 by season’s end. The not-so-secret of Chicago’s play is defense. In 23 games, they’ve allowed just 51 goals, the lowest total in the NHL. Only Buffalo and Boston have allowed less than 60 goals. They’ve also scored 77 goals, which ties them for second in the West.
